Being able to enter a relaxed state is very beneficial for you and your wellbeing. Learning how to allow your mind and body to calm down can bring about huge benefits. Relaxation can be a very individual experience and finding what works for you is important.
Below are three tried and tested methods that are successful in helping encourage a relaxed state:
1. One great way to help increase the rate at which you can relax is learning to be present and meditate. Meditation can also teach you how to breathe in a more beneficial way too, allowing a decrease in anxiety. Sequeira and Ahmed, 2012, stated that, “the practice of meditation may provide unique benefits that complement a lifestyle with balanced physical exercise, good nutrition, and a nourishing environment.” Further research shows their findings to be true and therapies for ASC individuals such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) have been developed and are successfully being used.
2. Another way that can help you to relax is to spend time outdoors in nature. You could couple this together with exercise, learning, spending time connecting with people or meditation to really start reaping the benefits for your health and wellbeing.
3. Being able to have proper, restorative sleep is vitally important for your health. This can be an issue for some and there may be numerous reasons as to why sleep may be difficult for you. However, just by paying attention to the other aspects of wellbeing and trying to positively change your situation will begin to bring about better sleep. Increasing your exercise physically and mentally and making sure you are eating correctly (for you) will begin to decrease certain barriers, like anxiety and depression, that may be causing poor sleep. Connecting with people can bring about some incredibly positive feelings about yourself and others around you which can help towards your mood overall. And if you can introduce more periods in your life where you can relax, be present in the moment and/or meditate you can create an environment for yourself where you are giving yourself the best opportunity to get some real, restorative, healing shut eye.
